Kindergarten at the Little Star Day SchoolAt Little Star Day School the developmental kindergarten programme recognizes that children will soon be entering schools that expect the child to perform both academically and socialy. Children who attend kindergarten at Little Star Day School will be fully prepared for the schools they will choose to attend. Little Star Day School provides a comprehensive approach to education with its kindergarten programme that challenges children and supports all areas of development. The approach to kindergarten is neither child-centred nor teacher-directed – it is a learning-centred approach. It recognizes both the value of an emergent curriculum and the need for directed sequential instruction to insure that children enter first grade with the skills and knowledge expected of them in the school they will attend. The expectations of childrens' behaviour recognize that children need the capacity for independent thinking and self-direction as well as the disposition and skills to conform to a range of settings. The Early Years Curriculum EYC® in every Little Star Day School kindergarten programme builds off the childs' knowledge base and skills, learning style and interests. There is a clear emphasis on the development of strong language, math, and science skills. The important "school skills" of listening carefully, following through on a sequence of tasks, and working cooperatively are reinforced as children are engaged in projects and daily activities. The teacher's role is to be aware of each child's developmental profile, plan the child choice learning environment, develop and implement projects and activities that fulfill the expectations for each childs' learning, and work closely with parents to ensure the childs' success in school and life.
